“Researching, Designing, & Educating for the Future”
Karel Vredenburg, Vice President of Client Insights at IBM

We’re experiencing change around the world at an unprecedented rate, yet our methods have much changed. This talk will make the case for and provide insight into the changes we need to make to our research, design, and education approaches and to the areas we focus on.

Karel is currently Vice President of Client Insights and has responsibility for leading the IBM’s global user research community and providing executive managerial leadership for the software user research organization. He has led design worldwide at IBM for most of his tenure with the company. For the past nine years, Karel introduced and implemented IBM’s new design system including Enterprise Design Thinking into each of the business units of the company globally—software, services, systems, and sales—as well as to hundreds of other companies, typically working with their C-suite level executives and boards. He was most recently responsible for IBM’s global design leadership, the company’s internal profession and culture of design, and the design organization’s external engagement and academic programs. He founded the Design Executive Team of senior design executives which governs the 3,000 person design organization, leads the Design Leadership Board which governs the appointments of IBM’s Design Principals and Distinguished Designers, and the 150 person strong design leadership community, both technical and managerial. Karel serves as the head of IBM Studios Canada, is the IBM Innovation Corps executive for Canada, and is Industry Professor at McMaster University. He co-founded the Future of Design Education initiative with Don Norman which is developing design curricula for the 21st Century for academic institutions worldwide. Karel is Vice President of the TVA Board of Directors and serves on the IBM ECF Board of Directors. He blogs on design, technology, and optimizing the human experience at karelvredenburg.com and transformed his within company mentoring into a popular podcast “Life Habits Mentoring” which is available on all podcast apps. He did undergraduate, masters, and doctoral studies at the University of Toronto initially in cognitive science and clinical psychology which later led to study, research, specialization, and his life-long passion for, practice of, and leadership in design and research at IBM. Karel is based in Toronto, Canada.
